Over a century ago, a wealthy Victorian naturalist set forth around the world to document and collect rare and exotic plants and animals to bring back to his lavish estate. Intending for his specimens to live freely within the numerous rooms of his mansion, the naturalist gave them sanctuary from their diminishing habitats around the globe.

Decades later, the naturalist passed, yet his menagerie continued to thrive as a last safe haven for species on the brink of extinction. Seeds germinated and lush environments flourished within the deteriorating rooms. Animals continued to flock to the menagerie as if by instinct, reclaiming the indoor space as their own last wilderness.

The Menagerie is a proposed picture book created in 2008, concerning the conservation of endangered species. Work exhibited here represents a selection of images featuring the rooms and inhabitants of The Menagerie.
